Why Isn’t My Child Getting Better at Writing?

If you have noticed that your child is not getting better at writing, but you are not sure why, I recommend addressing the following in the following order:

  1. Have a writing expert identify the holes in your child’s writing foundation through a writing assessment. If your child has weak spelling, grammar, editing, and/or vocabulary skills, they will never have strong writing skills.

  2. Have a writing expert properly fill in the identified holes in your child’s writing foundation using a systematic approach. More than one hole can be filled in at a time, but the order in which the holes are filled is critical. If they are filled in the wrong order, valuable time, effort, and money will be wasted.

  3. Ensure that your child is writing at an advanced level multiple times a week and getting expert feedback on their writing. If they are “journal writing” independently, they are just writing, not getting better at writing.

  4. Help your child prioritize writing. If they don’t prioritize it, they won’t get better at it, and children who do prioritize it will.

Learning how to write properly is a journey, and as parents, we must make sure that our children are on the right writing path so that they can become better writers.
