Is My Child a Good Writer?

If you have ever wondered if your child receiving A’s on school papers or in their English classes indicates that they are a good writer, you are not alone.

Unfortunately, these days, English grades are often composed of few to no writing assignments, and the bar for the grades for those assignments isn’t always raised as high as it should be; thus, grades shouldn’t be used to determine whether or not your child is a good writer.

One of the easiest ways for you as a parent to determine if your child is a good writer is to read a paper that they recently independently wrote (i.e., no help from anyone) and see how far you can make it through their writing piece without having to stop to “connect dots,” question your comprehension skills, etc. How soon you have to stop and how frequently you have to stop are direct indications of the weakness or strength of your child’s writing skills.

Writing is a form of communication, and it is supposed to be easy for readers to read and comprehend—from start to finish. If it is not, the writer needs to address possible writing skill deficits to improve their written communication skills and related skill sets.
