Traditional Tutoring & Writing
Ever since I founded my business, in May of 2014, I have never provided traditional tutoring services. I feel that workbook “learning” is more mindless than mindful, and school homework, paper, and test preparation help are only helpful until a student’s next homework assignment or paper is due or until their next test date—such “interventions” do not create independent successful and confident students and are not cost-effective in the long run because they don’t address root problems.
In order to have a long-term positive effect, a broader yet targeted approach needs to be used, especially with writing. It is essential to look beyond the current school writing assignment that a child is struggling with and look more closely at the holes in the child’s writing foundation, whether those be spelling, grammar, editing, vocabulary, or paragraph and essay construction ones, and address all of them and do so properly.
It is easy to fixate on the end result—being able to write concise, coherent, and well-polished paragraphs and essays; however, until time has been spent addressing the main foundational components of writing: namely spelling, grammar, and editing, the end result is going to be unattainable.
