5 Easy Ways to Help Your Children Become Better Writers Faster
Allow your children to be independent learners and writers: Let them take their writing classes and complete their homework for those classes by themselves, but ensure that they (especially middle and high school students) are consistently and thoughtfully completing that homework.
Help your children select a designated day to complete their writing homework (e.g., Thursdays). Ideally, it should be a day that they have no extracurricular activities and tend to have the least amount of school homework. It should also not be the same day of their writing class.
Ensure that your children are writing weekly; they will not get better at writing if they are not writing regularly.
Remind your children to always edit their writing—even single sentences—and make punctuation changes based on rules (and no, “hearing a pause” is not a comma rule!).
Help your children understand that spending time learning how to write now will save them time in high school and beyond.
